Pagham U18s 1 - 1 Selsey U18s

Late, Late drama as young Blues get a point on the road By Graham Jones

The u18s were on the road for the first time this season as they visited Pagham for a League fixture.

With the early morning clouds overhead seemingly getting darker as we approached kick off, the Blues got into their stride early on putting some neat passing moves together as they looked to take the initiative.

It was the Blues that looked more likely with the pace of Tom Flaherty causing early problems for the home side, though as the half wore on, for all their possession, they were maybe guilty of looking to play one too many passes. When required the home keeper performed well and thwarted chances from Nathan McIlwain and Tom, and as the heavens opened it looked like the first half may remain goalless.

Pagham themselves worked hard as a team and were looking to play whenever they could to their pacey striker, and it was just before half time that a long ball through the middle caught the Selsey backline out and the striker finished well to take home team into Half Time at 1-0.

With the rain increasing and the lightening also making an appearance, it created for a full bloodied second half, with the Blues throwing everything at the home side to get back in the game. With the keeper making a fantastic triple save, and on several occasions Selsey not being able to get that final connection to some well delivered set pieces, it looked like the game was drifting away.

With the home side doing whatever they could to run the clock down, it was in time added on, that a free-kick from the right from Nathan came off the bar and Jamie Simpson drilled home the much deserved equaliser. 1-1

There was still time for a hotly contested penalty shout for the Blues, only to be ruled out by the referee, as the game finished a point a piece.

Next up the 18s are back in the FA Youth Cup for their third instalment of the season as Southern League Premier side, Walton & Hersham, send their u18s down to the Seal Bay Resort Stadium on Thursday 21st, a 7:30pm kick off.
